Jonathan Street at West Washington Street will be closed for extended periods today and part of Thursday while Verizon workers do an emergency replacement of underground phone lines, Hagerstown City Engineer Rodney Tissue said Tuesday.

Columbia Gas workers were attaching corrosion testers to a gas line Tuesday when they accidentally hit a Verizon phone line, Columbia Gas spokesman Rob Boulware said.

The line was not properly marked by Miss Utility of Maryland, Tissue and Boulware said.

Detours were posted at the intersection, Tissue said.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes, he said.
