MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg woman has been charged with assaulting a school bus driver last week.

Christine Denise Alston, 24, of Advantage Drive in Martinsburg, was charged with one misdemeanor count of battery on a school employee.

Bus driver Helen Whittington was struck several times Thursday afternoon, according to Sgt. D.D. Forman of the West Virginia State Police. The incident happened at 3:07 p.m. when Whittington stopped her bus on Jenny Wren Drive to drop off students.

Forman said Alston has not given a statement to police. Statements were not taken from the approximately 25 children who witnessed the incident, he said.

When he arrived, Forman said Alston had already left and Whittington was inside her bus with the doors closed. Whittington was taken to City Hospital for a possible concussion, Forman said.

Alston turned herself in Saturday, Forman said. She was free on $5,000 bail.

On her public defender request form, Alston indicated she has no children, but listed a 16-year-old cousin as a dependent.

A conviction on the charge is punishable by 10 days to a year in jail.
