MARTINSBURG, W.VA. - A man was shot in the chest Sunday night near a garage along U.S. 11 north of Martinsburg, police said.

Shortly after the 7:33 p.m. incident, police had another man in custody who admitted to police that he committed the shooting, said Lt. K.C. Bohrer of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

The victim was shot with a handgun, Bohrer said.

Bohrer said he believed the victim was being flown to a hospital Sunday night.

Bohrer said he could not release additional details, including names of the victim or the suspect.

The building was a white, two-bay garage located near the edge of U.S. 11 north of the intersection with W.Va. 901. It is across the street from 81 Self Storage.

Bohrer said he could not tell whether the shooting occurred inside or outside the building.

About five deputies were gathered around the building Sunday night. Some were searching through items inside.

Jackie Winebrenner said she was checking the property at 81 Self Storage when she heard the commotion from the shooting. Winebrenner said she was conducting security checks at the property Sunday night to make sure the units were safe.

Winebrenner said she was at the back of the property and came to the front when the shooting occurred.

The man who was shot was outside the garage and was in a sitting position, she said.

Medics bandaged the middle of the man's back, Winebrenner said.

There is a two-story white house next to the garage and Winebrenner said people were going back and forth from the house to the garage throughout the day.

"I wondered what was so interesting in there," Winebrenner said.
