Nona I. Bitner

Nona Irene Merkel Bitner, 76, of 752 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at her home.

Born April 22, 1926, in Allentown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Norman S. and Alice M. Deemer Merkel.

She was the 1944 valedictorian of Allentown High School. She was a 1947 graduate of Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, and in 1951 received her bachelor of science degree from Johns Hopkins University. She was a student at Dallas Bible Institute in Dallas from 1951 to 1952 and attended Houghton College in New York from 1948 to 1950.

She was on staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1947 to 1948 and 1950 to 1951. She served as a missionary nurse in Haiti, West Indies, from 1956 until 1976 with the Unevangelized Fields Mission. After leaving Haiti, she was a home nurse for relatives and friends.

She was a member of Calvary Grace Brethren Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert O. Bitner, whom she married Aug. 10, 1951; a daughter, Rebecca A. Hartt of State Line, Pa.; three sons, David R. Bitner and Paul D. Bitner, both of Greencastle, Pa., and Peter S. Bitner of Sokode, Togo, West Africa; a sister, Dorothy M. Allday of Sun City, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Calvary Grace Brethren Church, Hagerstown. The Rev. Douglas A. Courter will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown and Tuesday at noon at the church.

William E. Bloom

William Edward Bloom, 79, of 325 Brookline Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at his home.

Born Sept. 28, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William E. and Hazel E. Bloom.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred M. Bloyer Bloom, in 2001.

He retired from Fairchild Aircraft after 45 years of service.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 378, American Legion Dixon Troxell Post 211 in Funkstown, AMVETS Post 10 and Williamsport Red Men Conococheague Tribe 84 and was a volunteer of the Washington County Hospital Auxiliary.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda S. Myers of Palm Harbor, Fla.; three sisters, Josephine Burkett, Barbara Rowe and Beverly Gigeous, all of Hagerstown; a grandson; three great-grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rosalee Bloom.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert S. Barton will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown.

Kathryn E. Wolfe

WILLIAMSPORT - Kathryn Ellretta Mong Wolfe, 84, of 10404 Mikie Drive, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Reeder's Memorial Home in Boonsboro.

Born Oct. 29, 1917, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late David E. and Lillian E. Kendall Mong.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emanuel F. Wolfe, in 1997.

She retired from the A&P Store in Waynesboro in 1976 after 17 years. Earlier, she worked at the Waynesboro Knitting Co. and Stanley Co., Chambersburg, Pa.

She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church, where she was a member of Jolly 60's Ministry.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by a daughter, Dolores M. Hayes of Hagerstown; a son, Emanuel E. Wolfe Sr. of Boonsboro; four sisters, Sylvia M. Weaver of Zullinger, Pa., Charlotte R. Heefner and Margaret L. Bennett, both of Waynesboro, and Helen I. McCardell of Chambersburg; two brothers, Sidney Mong of Smithsburg and Homer E. Mong of Waynesboro; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, William D. Wolfe; a sister, Mary E. Weaver; and five brothers, Paul E. Mong, Elmer F. Mong, Joseph A. Mong, Richard O. Mong and David E. Mong Jr.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. The Revs. William Clark and Thomas Tennis will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Virginia M. Mackereth

Virginia Mae Mackereth, 83, of Point Salem Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at her home.
