WAYNESBORO, Pa. - The Trinity Shamrocks built a 40-point lead at halftime on their way to a 53-0 victory over the Waynesboro Indians in a non-conference game Friday night.

Trinity scored a eight touchdowns against Waynesboro (0-2) and was successful on five of its eight extra-point kicks.

Trinity (2-0) got on the scoreboard with 1:12 remaining in the first quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by Dan Hirsch.

Trinity defensive tackle Will Healey intercepted a pass 36 seconds later and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0.

"We're very happy with the way that we played," Trinity coach Jeff Boger said. "I think the key play for us was that 25-yard interception return for a touchdown by Will Healey for our second touchdown. That seemed to light a spark underneath us."

The Shamrocks added four more touchdowns in the second quarter. Junior fullback Jonathan Smith scored the Shamrocks' first three touchdowns of the period on runs of six, 38 and 66 yards. Scott Jocken added a 2-yard touchdown run exactly one minute before halftime for Trinity's other score in the period.

The Shamrocks got their final two touchdowns in the third quarter. Senior halfback Rob Lutz broke loose for touchdown runs of 70 and 60 yards.

Lutz rushed for 137 yards on only six carries, while Smith rushed for 115 yards on just five carries for the Shamrocks.

"Jonathan Smith and Rob Lutz are both guys with lots of speed that can make big plays for us," Boger said. "They found the holes created by the offensive line and they ran right through them. We wanted to get Chris Crane off on the right foot tonight. We need him to throw the football for us."

Crane completed eight of his nine passes for 145 yards for Trinity.

"Once we faced adversity, it started to steamroll," Waynesboro coach Dave Mahaffey said. "We have to learn that you have to play for an entire game and that you have practice for an entire week, because you end up playing the way that you practice. Trinity played the football game the way that a football game should be played."
