W.Va. man charged with not registering as a sex offender

September 05, 2002

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was charged Wednesday with one misdemeanor count of failure to register as a sex offender after he allegedly failed to register as required by law.

Alden J. Collyer, 46, of West King Street, has been living in the city at least since April, when he obtained a nondriver ID, said Martinsburg Police Department Cpl. John Sherman. In 1994, Collyer was convicted in Coldwater, Mich., of one count of criminal sexual conduct fourth-degree (force or coercion), a misdemeanor, records show.

Sherman found Collyer sleeping on the ground along North Spring Street on Aug. 18 and, after checking his ID, became aware of the registration lapse, according to court records. Sherman told Collyer to register with the West Virginia State Police, but Collyer did not, police allege.

Collyer was being held in the Eastern Regional Jail Wednesday on $10,000 bail.

A conviction on the charge carries a penalty of up to a year in jail.
