N.Y. man sentenced in W.Va. on drug charge

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A five-year prison sentence was handed down Wednesday in the case of a New York man convicted in June of a crack cocaine distribution charge, U.S. Attorney Thomas Johnston said.

Cleon Edwards, 31, of 1919 Pacific St., Brooklyn, pleaded guilty June 4 to one count of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine in connection with a Martinsburg Police Department operation in late November 2001.

During that operation, 12 grams of cocaine were seized, court records said.

Judge Craig Broadwater ordered that once released, Edwards will be on probation for four years, court records said.

Pa. man hospitalized after crash on 316

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A 92-year-old Waynesboro man was hospitalized after he drove his car from a driveway into the path of an oncoming vehicle Tuesday evening, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Police said Paul H. Stouffer was pulling out from a driveway on Pa. 316 near Wharf Road at 5 p.m. and collided with a northbound Ford Bronco driven by Carolyn S. Baker, 43, of Waynesboro.


Both drivers were wearing seat belts, but Stouffer was taken to Waynesboro Hospital with moderate injuries, police said.

He was listed in good condition Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Two men injured in head-on collision in Pa.

MONT ALTO, Pa. - A head-on collision in Quincy Township Tuesday night sent two men to the hospital, Pennsylvania State Police said.

John Daywalt, 19, of Waynesboro, was driving a 1984 Ford Mustang south on Pa. 233 near Slabtown Road when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a northbound Chevrolet Cavalier, police said.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Shawn Rhone, 31, of Fayetteville, Pa., was taken to Waynesboro Hospital and later transported to Hershey Medical Center. He was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

His passenger, Brian Knepper, 41, of Fayetteville, was flown to Hershey Medical Center with broken bones and severe cuts, police said. He was listed in fair condition Wednesday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Daywalt was charged with driving under the influence, aggravated assault with a vehicle, accident involving death or personal injury, accident involving death or personal injury while not licensed, and several summary violations, police said.

He was being held in Franklin County Prison Wednesday on $25,000 bond, a prison spokeswoman said.

Woman charged with firing gun off porch

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Chambersburg woman faces charges after allegedly discharging a gun off her porch Saturday, Chambersburg Police said.

Police charged Julie Meredith, 280 Linden Ave., with recklessly endangering, disorderly conduct and discharging a firearm in the Borough of Chambersburg.

She was arraigned before District Justice Shirley Shatzer and released on $6,000 bail, police said.

According to police, at around 5:50 p.m. two shots were fired from her back porch. There were numerous residents outside at the time, police said.
