The City of Hagerstown is involved in planning two Sept. 11 remembrance events, Public Information Manager Karen Giffin told the Hagerstown City Council at Tuesday's meeting.

A ceremony, "In Honor and Remembrance - Woodmen Salutes America's Heroes," will be held at 10 a.m. at Fairgrounds Park.

At 7 p.m., the city and other sponsors will host a communitywide Sept. 11 Remembrance Event at Municipal Stadium.

The free event will include performances by the South Hagerstown High School Band and a community choir.

Robert Kulp of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Maryland Teachers Association has volunteered to organize the musical portion of the program.

The County Commuter will shuttle people from Fairgrounds Park to the stadium and back, starting at 6 p.m., Giffin said.

The event is sponsored by a number of groups including the Hagerstown Suns, the Washington County Commissioners, the Washington County Council of Churches, Washington County Department of Emergency Services, Hagerstown Fire Department, Hagerstown Police Department, the Joint Veterans Council of Washington County, the American Red Cross and Woodmen of the World Lodge 1, Hagerstown Trust, Phantom Shadow and Keller-Stonebraker Insurance Inc.

Organizers for the stadium event are looking for volunteers to sing in the choir and to usher. People interested in volunteering can call Giffin at 301-739-8577, extension 116.

Merrill Lynch is offering a free breakfast to all local law enforcement and fire personnel from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Fairgrounds Park on Sept. 11, she said.
