Grief recovery: More than a 3-day leave

Many of us stood stricken with grief on Sept. 11 as we watched or listened to the chaos surrounding the fall of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the airliner crash into the Pentagon and the Washington-bound jet fly into the ground in Pennsylvania.

It was the kind of grief that for some would only deepen as they received the news that their loved one would not be coming home due to the terrorists' deliberate destruction of human life in America.

How did you handle the grief that came from Sept. 11? How are you handling that grief today?

How are you dealing with the grief you feel for a loved one who has passed on?

These three simple questions probably have thousands of different answers.

Many of you may prefer not to answer any of them. You just continue to push the emotions, the grief, and the despair to the back of your mind until it surfaces the next time.

Our society has become accustomed to an extremely fast pace, but grief is not on a time schedule.

It is a healing of the heart and soul. It does not occur overnight or in three days, which is the customary amount of time most businesses allow for bereavement time from work.

Many of us, don't know what to say to those who are grieving. We just know that we'll feel a lot better when they get over it.

Easier said than done!

At some time or another we all are bereaved. For anyone in our county who is dealing with the loss of a loved one, Hospice of Washington County, Inc. offers a Grief Recovery Support Group and one-on-one counseling.

Our next support group meetings will begin on Monday, Sept. 9.
