Jean S. Croft

Jean S. Croft, 86, of 209 Calvert Terrace, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at her home.

Born Dec. 23, 1915, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Paul C. and Helen Manning Seiders.

Her husband, Charles P. Croft, died in 1994.

She was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Croft of New Haven, Conn., and Thomas Croft of Middletown, Md.; one sister, Joan Roemer of Parkville, Md.; three grandchildren; and one stepgranddaughter.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagers-town. The Rev. John W. Ailstock will officiate.

Robert W. Muritz

Robert William Muritz, 86, of 12010 Mayfair Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at his home.

Born July 16, 1916, near Hagers-town, he was the son of the late C. Frank and Letha Crum Muritz.

He was employed by Fairchild Corp. for 21 years. He retired from Mack Trucks Inc. in 1981 after 20 years.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, served as chief usher and was representative of the Branch of Lutheran Brotherhood.

He was a member of the Gold Bulldogs.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise Virginia Muritz; two sons, Robert E. Muritz and David C. Muritz, both of Hagerstown; one brother, George Muritz of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles F. Muritz, Harry L. Muritz and Donald C. Muritz.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagers-town. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bertha M. Bean

Bertha Mae "Sylvia" Bean, 72, of 952 Kuhn Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 20, 1930, in Algonquin, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Giles J. and Bertha Mae Lusk Bailey.

She was employed by West Manufacturing and had worked for E.J. Fennel for 34 years.

She had been a member of the Church of the Nazarene and taught Sunday school.

She was a member of Western Enterprise Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, AMVETS Post 10 Women's Auxiliary, VFW 1936 Women's Auxiliary and Funkstown American Legion Post 211 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles L. Bean; one daughter, Sandra Tressler of Hagerstown; one son, Charles T. Bean of Hagerstown; one sister, Gladys Bean of Hagerstown; one brother, Charles J. Bailey Jr. of Athens, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ollie Hill.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagers-town. The Rev. Jeffrey L. Rankin will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Mary J. Buterbaugh

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Mary J. Buterbaugh, 57, of 23327 Great Cove Road, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Jan. 6, 1945, in McConnellsburg, she was the daughter of Lloyd Smith Sr. of McConnellsburg and the late Clara Cooper Smith.

She worked in home health care, taking care of the elderly.

She is survived by her husband, Robert I. Buterbaugh of St. Thomas, Pa.; one daughter, Lisa Covert of Mercersburg, Pa.; two sons, Mike Buterbaugh and Brian Buterbaugh, both of Cumberland, Md.; two brothers, Lloyd Smith Jr. and George Smith, both of McConnellsburg; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, John Carbaugh.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home in McConnellsburg. The Rev. Chalmer Hann will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday at 10 a.m. The funeral home will open at 2 p.m. Thursday.




Howard N. Clendening

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Howard Nelson Clendening, 94, of Charles Town, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Integrated Health Services in Charles Town.

Born Aug. 27, 1908, in Kabletown, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles B. Sr. and Frances B. Watson Clendening.

His first wife, Louise Rissler Clendening, died in November 1977. His second wife, Elsie V. Painter Clendening, died in 2001.

He attended Jefferson County, W.Va., schools.

He retired from the Charles Town Post Office after 38 years. He was a deputy assessor for Jefferson County and was employed by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home.

He was a member of Kabletown United Methodist Church.
