A third Tri-State area child was killed Saturday in an accident involving farm equipment.
Saturday at 5:15 p.m., River Cody, 8, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., was at a private function at 9802 Fountain School Road in Union Bridge. Cody and others were riding in a series of metal carts being pulled behind a tractor, said Frederick County Sheriff's deputies.
Cody was in the lead cart with several other children when he apparently lost his balance and fell off.
He landed on the ground and was run over by at least three sets of the cart's wheels, deputies said.
The tractor stopped at once and the adults at the event administered first aid, deputies said. The child was taken to Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"River would have been in the third grade at Shepherdstown Elementary School," said his mother, Rachael Cody.
She described her only child as a very adventurous little boy.
