Mail Call for 8/21

August 22, 2002

"To the person who is confused about Dear Abby, you didn't miss anything. At the end of the every column, every day, it says that Pauline and Jeanne Phillips, a.k.a. Abigail Van Buren, are syndicated columnists. That is who they are. Read it next time."

"I enjoy 'The Star-Spangled Banner' at the beginning of sporting events, but Friday night, listening to the way it was sung at the Baltimore Orioles and Tigers game, that was disgusting. This person butchered 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'"

"I read in Mail Call on Monday where someone stole a solar light from a grave at Rest Haven Cemetery. I was so saddened to think that there are people out there, even if they are kids, that would go into a place of rest and steal from the dead. If I had a child who would do something like that, I would be so ashamed. Hopefully, some day, they will grow up and see the error of their ways. But, rest assured, where your loved one lives the light always shines. Nobody can steal the light there and there is no eternal darkness because in Heaven, God's love is so bright that nobody can take that."

"To the person who put in Mail Call about everyone in Williamsport yelling about the tables and chairs on the street and now they are going to lose all the pop machines and paper machines. I don't know where you got your information from but you are all wrong, nothing has been said about that. All this lady had to do was go up to the Zoning Board and ask for another zoning bill and she would have gotten her chairs with no problem at all. This thing has been blown out of proportion. This is the nicest little town that I have ever been in, I have lived here for 54 years."

"Maybe the situation with Mr. Howard being the ex-county employee, maybe he has some goods on the County Commissioners and the way they run things."

"To the lady who had trouble with bees, call Beekeepers. It's going to cost you some money, but they have to be gassed, it's the only way to get rid of them. I had them chew through my walls and ceiling in my house."

"There are ways to discipline a child without spanking or slapping them. If you go to the county government, Social Services, they have a child-parenting division and it can help a lot. There is no disgrace in this anymore than there is any embarrassment in getting anything good for your child. I encourage anyone who gets frustrated with their child and hits him in any way to seek out the parent-child organization and learn some new skills. The way you were raised, being slapped or beaten, is not the only way to deal with your frustration and the child's misbehavior. They can teach you a lot."

"Everyone seems to be upset about our County Commissioners not telling us anything about Howard. I am too but they never tell us anything they are doing. Penny Nigh is the only one who writes letters and articles to update us and tell us what she has been up to and what her priorities are. I think our commissioners should be required to write an article every few weeks or months to let us know what the issues are."

"I agree with Mr. Miller, who is running for County Commissioner in the primary. He said that the people of Washington County are not stupid. I agree with him 100 percent."

"To the guards at the Detention Center: How dare you even compare yourself with the patrol division? Were you ever sent on a domestic with no backup? Did you ever have a foot chase with a suspect wearing a heavy gun belt and vest in all kinds of weather? You sit in the air conditioning in the summer and in the heat in the winter. They are outside in all conditions. Did you ever have to investigate a suicide or a bad accident? Have you ever saved anyone? Have you ever talked someone out of committing suicide? Did you ever have to take a call on a huge fight alone and end up with an entire gang on your back? Just walk in these guys' shoes for one week, I'll bet you will either quit or beg for your good job back. You say you are working with an average of 12 men. How would you like to work the entire county with only four deputies and sometimes three of them on the road?"

"This is Mary Jane and I wanted to thank all my friends and co-workers for helping me through the past few months and I wanted to let them know that Mary Jane is coming home. To my best friend Judy, I could have never gotten through this without you. I love you and thank you."
