August 19, 2002

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Julio Pavon wiggled out of two first-and-third jams and Bryan Carter hit a two-run homer as the Hagerstown Suns defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats 3-2 on Friday night.

Anthony Pannone (8-8) went five innings for Hagerstown (24-30). He allowed three hits and issued five walks. He also struck out six.

Kevin Alexander led off the Suns' first inning with a double and took third on an error. He scored on Derin McMains groundout.

Tyler Von Schell stretched his team-high hitting streak to 13 games with a fourth-inning double and scored on Carter's opposite-field homer, his 13th this season.

Pavon recorded his sixth save this season getting out of two tough situations. He relieved Daniel Padgett in the eighth inning, inheriting runners on first and third with one out. He induced an RBI groundout before ending the eighth.

Pavon again faced a first-and-third situation in the ninth, this his own doing, but got the final out on a grounder.
