Powell dead at 81

August 19, 2002

Reno Powell, a staple of the Hagerstown baseball scene for more than four decades, died Friday morning at Washington County Hospital at age 81.

Powell was a coach and officer at the Hagerstown PONY League for 42 years. He served as the tournament director of the sectional tournament held at Funkhouser Park last month.

Powell delighted in working with youth. At the Hagerstown PONY League's 50th anniversary celebration in 2001, Powell said he was "a millionaire because you can't take the memories out of my head of seeing all these young boys and what they've accomplished."

In 1977, he founded the Hagerstown Braves, a semi-pro baseball team that played in the Franklin County Adult League. The Braves still play today in the Blue Ridge Adult League.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren on Mulberry Street, where Powell was a member.
