Maryland residents who want to vote in the Sept. 10 primary election must register by 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Applications must be received in the Washington County Election Board office at Room 101, 35 W. Washington St. before then, Election Director Dorothy Kaetzel said.

Applications are available at the Election Board office and at many state offices including the Motor Vehicle Administration, Health Department, Department of Social Services, Office of Aging or Division of Rehabilitation Services, marriage license bureaus, public higher education institutions, post offices and public libraries.

Citizens may have a voter registration application mailed to them by calling the state's 24-hour toll-free number at 1-800-222-VOTE.

Citizens also may download a voter registration application from the State Board of Elections Web site at www.electionsmaryland.com.

Aug. 20 is also the deadline for elderly or disabled voters who want to vote in person to request a polling place change.
