August 14, 2002

A man whose vehicle ran out of gas Tuesday afternoon in the 20600 block of Jefferson Boulevard was hit by a car as he walked to a nearby service station at 2:30 p.m., Maryland State Police said.

The man, whose identity wasn't available, was taken to Washington County Hospital by Community Rescue Service personnel and later airlifted to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Trooper 1st Class Doug Bird said Jennifer Nicole Smith, 21, of 22613 Jefferson Blvd., was westbound when she failed to see the man who was walking to the Liberty Gas Station to get fuel.

The man was hit by the right front fender of Smith's Chevrolet Z24 in the area of Emerald Drive, he said.
