Terry Joe Nichols, 36, of the 200 block of Knoxville Road and Earl Clifton Gravely, 20, of the 3300 block of Old South Mountain Road are charged with first-degree arson.

The fire caused an estimated $75,000 damage to a two-story frame house owned by Kathy Pearson, investigators said.

The state fire marshal's office is investigating whether the arson was a racially motivated hate crime. At the time of the fire, Pearson and her family had moved out because of problems with their neighbors, investigators said.

Fire investigators said the blaze was set in the second-story bedroom.
