Va. man arrested on Internet sex charge

FREDERICK - A Virginia man was arrested late Tuesday after traveling to Maryland to meet with a 13-year-old girl police allege he met on the Internet and with whom he had prior sexual contact.

Mario N. Martinez, 25, of the 5500 block of Lacrosse Court, Fairfax, Va., was charged with three counts of second-degree sex offense. His bond was set at $15,000 Tuesday, Maryland State Police said.

Officials at the Frederick County Detention Center Wednesday night said Martinez was no longer a prisoner there.

The mother of the girl contacted members of the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force on Aug. 1 and reported that her daughter had met a man in a cyberspace chat room.

When the girl was confronted by her mother after failing to arrive at a friend's home, the mother learned that her daughter had met the man in June and had sex with him at an Urbana golf course, police alleged.

A Frederick County Sheriff's deputy and member of the task force communicated with Martinez through the Internet posing as the girl and confirmed details learned from the victim, police alleged.

After Martinez allegedly made an unsolicited offer to engage in sexual activity with the victim, a meeting was arranged at a mall at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, police said. When Martinez arrived, he was taken into custody.
