Man charged with hitting woman with hammer

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A man who police allege beat his girlfriend with a hammer and punched and kicked her was arrested over the weekend.

Charles William Johnson, 31, of Winchester Avenue, was charged with a felony count of malicious wounding and one misdemeanor count of domestic battery.

The woman also was hit with a glass plate and she was threatened, according to Deputy S. Crites of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

The woman suffered severe bruising in her rib cage area and cuts and other injuries on her head, neck and arms, records show.
