Mail Call for 7/29

July 30, 2002

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some` of the calls we have received lately:

"The Thursday Daily Mail A3 section, 'How would you feel if the hospital moved out of the city limits?' They have some good answers and good people down here. I like the one, the 46-year old said, why are they building a new one to begin with? Is the current one insufficient? That's what I would like to know. The citizens of Hagerstown don't know why they want to build. Could someone answer that?"

"The voices to Mail Call as well as the article in the paper about the hospital location being down in the Fennel building because its adjacent to their parking lot, a lot of open space and it's right where they are at. Adequate space, I think it's a great idea."

"Why do we need a new hospital? Why do we need a new stadium? Where is the justification in all this money being spent?"

"You people should forget about a drive-in theatre. It won't happen. We would get drive through video stores first. Videos killed the drive- in. That plus people hiding kids under blankets to save buying tickets and bringing food and drink instead of buying and also the vandalism."

"I didn't know that it was appropriate for people who worked at banks to use private information from private accounts to go after money. It's not appropriate and people need to know about it."

"After reading recent articles from commissioner Paul Swartz and candidate Wally McClure about the Board of Education and the proposed stadium, I am convinced more than ever that Swartz is on his way out and McClure is coming in."

"These people calling in about the deaf people not being allowed to have licenses and shouldn't be driving. Give me a break. There are people out there that blare the radios and couldn't hear the ambulances any more than a deaf person could."

"You know, it's a slap in the face of every single American that the Muslim that is on trial, brings his mother to the court and she gets to mouth off and talk about how innocent her son is and all of the evidence shows how guilty he is. It's a slap in the face to all of us Americans."

"In response to the deaf drivers. No they can't hear emergency vehicles, they are deaf, but their other senses are more keen and they kick in. Deaf people see, smell and notice things a lot more quickly than hearing people. The deaf sign in the car window, that helps them inform an officer that they are deaf. There is no reason why they shouldn't have one. I have never heard any of them being run down because they didn't hear the emergency. Did you know that deaf people, work, marry have children and even go to school. Imagine that. If you would like to know more, call the Deafnet Association, a wonderful organization in Hagerstown with a wealth of knowledge about deafness. You can even meet some fabulous deaf people while you are at it."

"I would like to thank the people at the supermarket on Virginia Avenue who really do a good job of packing the groceries correctly. They put the frozen things together and they are very efficient. There are also sufficient parking spaces for the people who are handicapped. The people there are very kind and it seems like the customers are more pleasant and help each other."

"Someone called in about the Tri-State Christian Academy. Maybe you are talking about Grace Academy. It's out near Tri-State Church on Cearfoss Pike. But I have never heard about a Tri-State Academy."

"To all the people that have brown eyes and think that you can't have a blue- or green-eyed child. Well, I have a buddy that has one green eye and one blue eye. Figure that out. Both of his parents have brown eyes."

"About the Mail Call on July 19 where someone asked if anyone who had an accident and have had either high blood pressure or diabetes to call Mail Call. Well my phone number is 301-582-2671. Leave a message and I will call you back."

"In regards to the lady who wanted to know about the Web site that has the sex offenders, criminals and most wanted. There is a Web site in Hagerstown called, www.hagerstownwatch.org. They have a lot of information on there about known fugitives and criminals."

"About the accident that happened on Sharpsburg Pike. I think that Social Services should keep an eye on the kids that live on Sharpsburg Pike."
