Two Hagerstown Planning Department employees will take turns serving as interim planning director while a replacement is found for Ric Kautz, who retired from that position.

Kautz, whose last day on the job was Friday, was planning director for 24 years. His salary was $68,432.

Hagerstown Economic Development Coordinator Deborah Everhart will serve as interim planning director for the next two months, City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman said.

Senior Planning Kathleen Maher will serve as interim planning director for the following two months, Zimmerman said.

The city hopes to hire a replacement for Kautz this fall, Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said Everhart and Maher will share the role because they are "two talented and qualified people. We are just trying to utilize their talents."

Everhart said she has not decided if she will apply for the position but said "I have an interest in the position."

Everhart has worked in the planning department for about 20 years. Her annual salary is $54,101, Human Resources Director Donna Messina said.

Asked if she would apply for the job, Maher said, "I am going to keep my options open and see how the interim process goes."

Maher has been a senior planner for about seven years.

Maher's annual salary is $48,818, Messina said.

The current salary range for the planning director position is $49,816 to $77,418, but that could change if the city decides to change the job description, Messina said.
