S. Caroline keeps Halfway halfway away from finals

Halfway is heading to the losers' bracket of the Maryland 9-10 Little League Baseball Tournament after being defeated 7-4 by South Caroline Sunday at American Little League.

"South Caroline is a good team," Halfway manager Scott Herbert said. "They scored when they had the opportunities. Unfortunately, we didn't get the big hit when we needed it today. All we can do is fight tomorrow."

Halfway will play Arbutus tonight at 6 p.m. in the losers' bracket final. The winner will play South Caroline in the championship round of the double-elimination tournament on Tuesday.

South Caroline manager Curtis Payne said his pitchers made the difference.

"We started Robbie Payne at pitcher, hoping that his curve ball would throw them off pace," Payne said. "When he ran out of gas in the fourth inning, we brought in Brady Hare. Brady has a sidearm delivery. Our pitchers got more strikeouts than we thought they would. The extra strikeouts were really a plus."

Hare gave up one run and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings of relief to get the win, and contributed on offense with three hits. Chad Hicks added two hits and three RBI, while Payne also had two hits.

"We were able to hit balls over their outfielders' heads with runners on base," Payne said.

Aaron Stotelmyer had two hits for Halfway.
