County woman faces assault charges

A 38-year-old Washington County woman was being held on $50,000 bond at the Washington County Detention Center Friday night on eight charges stemming from an incident earlier this month Washington County Sheriff's Department said.

At 6:47 p.m. July 19, Deputy 1st Class Tom Routzahn arrived at 1333 Salem Church Road in response to a domestic violence call, Routzahn said in a news release. When Routzahn arrived, Clara Cummings came out of the house carrying an aluminum baseball bat and started smashing her boyfriend's car while he was inside it, the deputy said.

After Routzahn got the bat away from her, Cummings allegedly ran to her boyfriend and "punched him numerous times in the face," the release said.

The deputy used pepper spray on her and wrestled her to the ground, the release said. During the struggle, Cummings' dog bit the deputy several times, the release said.
