Mail Call for 7/25

July 25, 2002

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Doesn't anyone have anything better to do than watch 'Guiding Light' and other soaps in the afternoon? Who cares about Reva Shane? Life in not about soaps, get real."

"I tried Vicks Vapo Rub on my feet and now I am upside down. My nose runs and my feet smell."

"I'll do my best to tell you where God was when the 5-year-old girl was raped and murdered. God was in the girl. The Bible tells us that God made us in His own image. Who do you think was in her attacker? I can tell you, it was the Devil. If you are looking for a perfect world, I can tell you how to find it, however, this is not a perfect world. This is a world where good and evil meet. You can choose whose side you want to be on God's or the Devil's. God gives life, while the Devil takes life. God has the girl and thanks to Jesus Christ she is alive in the perfect world. Don't blame God for something a man chooses to do. Once you are born into this world, you have to choose who you are going to serve."

"I want to take this time to publicly thank my brothers Rik and Bill for finally accepting God into their lives."

"To the person who said they couldn't get any funnel cakes at the carnivals this year. Apparently, you didn't come to the Great Boonsboro Carnival that runs the last week in May. Take a note and maybe you can get some there next year."

"To the person about the funnel cakes. Sept. 7-8, at the Boonsesbourough Days, the Lions Club of Boonsboro serves the funnel cakes."

"Thursday night there was a product discussed on TV for lowering your blood pressure without medication that had been approved by the FDA. No prescription was needed to get this. A Web site was given, which I was unable to get and I don't know the station or program it was on. Does anyone know the name of the product, the Web site or the station it was on?"

"I read about the West Nile Virus in several places around Maryland. In Sharpsburg, I was wondering if anyone else has had trouble with not seeing any birds around? I was wondering if this virus was around our area?"

"On Friday evening I read an editorial that was interesting. The man that wrote it, is all wet in my opinion. I think Penny Nigh and Chief of Police Arthur Smith are doing as well as expected on the drug situation in Hagerstown. It's the people who live in the neighborhood that make the neighborhood. If we don't work together to try to run the drug dealers out, and don't backpedal or tread water, we can do the job. But we all have to work together, we can't pull apart. If one person sees something, write down the time and the place. Sometimes a picture helps, but sometimes you aren't allowed to use them in court. I think instead of pointing fingers, we should clench our fists and work together as a team and see if we can do something ourselves. You have good people and bad people. Let's work together and see if we can get a Crime Watch Neighborhood on North Mulberry Street."

"To the low life that threw the beer bottle and damaged my mailbox on Walnut Point Road on Saturday morning at 7:20. It was a little early in the morning to be drinking, let alone driving. I have notified the proper authorities."

"To the person who wanted to know where God was when that little girl was raped and murdered. Number 1, God didn't allow that to happen, a man on earth did that. God had nothing to do with that. The way we treated God by kicking Him out of the schools and prayer, do you think He should help America? Personally, my fellow Americans make me sick."

"I would like to thank the man who offered to help me with my groceries at Wal-Mart on Saturday. He was a customer just like me. He saw that I had a physical disability and figured I needed assistance getting the groceries out of my cart. I want to say thanks, even though I was fine without his help. It's nice to know that there are still people out there still willing to help. I very much appreciate that."

"Has anyone else noticed the difference in the birds, you hardly see any of them at all. The hummingbirds are around. Has it been too hot for them or what? Has anyone else noticed this problem?"

"I want to comment on Mr. Gary Taylor's letter on Friday, July 19. He said that the police are losing the drug war. He is absolutely correct, his letter was excellent. I think he realizes by now that our police chief is a politician first, then a chief."

"I see Washington County got trading zone status. I just don't think we have the right people in position to help Washington County. It just seems like when the officials around here get involved in something like this, it cost the taxpayers a lot of money."
