Lightning apparently starts fire

July 24, 2002

Lightning apparently struck a house on Garis Shop Road near Funkstown at about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, said Kevin Kotanko, assistant chief of the Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co.

The strike put a small hole in the roof of the house, but any fire that it sparked was out within 10 minutes, Kotanko said.

Any damage was confined to the attic of the house, he said.

Charles Copeland, 20, said he was reading when the lightning apparently struck the roof of the house at 9417 Garis Shop Road.

"It was like a firecracker went off in the living room," Copeland said.

The power went off momentarily, he said.

Copeland said he went outside to see what happened, but didn't see anything.

He said he smelled smoke when he came back inside the house.
