HALFWAY - Halfway scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning Monday on its way to a 10-4 win over Frederick American in the deciding game of the Maryland Section 1 9-and-10-Year-Old Tournament at Marty Snook Park.

Halfway advances to the double-elimination Maryland State Tournament this weekend at American Little League in Hagerstown. Halfway will play the Section 3 winner Saturday at 5 p.m. The Section 2 and Section 4 winners open the tournament at 1 p.m.

"This is a wonderful team to coach," Halfway manager Scott Herbert said. "I have not been around a complete group of kids on a team that can hit, play defense and is fundamentally sound from the first player to the last player."

Halfway's five-run outburst in the the sixth consisted of an RBI single by Josh Green, a two-run double by Dylan Zimmerman, a throwing error that scored Zimmerman and an RBI single by Chris McSherry.

"We hit the ball well," Zimmerman said. "When we needed to do it, we came through. We kept it together and we didn't give up. We kept hitting the ball. It feels great to win another championship. All of our hard work has paid off. I am very proud of our team. The coaches taught us well. We had a very positive attitude."

Aaron Stotelmyer had two hits and two RBI and McSherry added two hits for Halfway. Halfway pitchers Brandon McCauley and Kyle Crist scattered seven hits and struck out eight.
