Lightning strikes house

July 21, 2002

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Lightning struck a house Friday, causing a small fire, said Rodney Crowell, chief of the Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co.

The fire department was called to 2919 Mountain Lake Road at 2:49 p.m.

A family was home when lightning hit, but got out OK, Crowell said. He did not know who the family was.

Crowell said the fire was under a crawl space and got into the kitchen. It caused an estimated $5,000 worth of damage.

Crowell said the house was not destroyed, but wires were burned, so electricity was shut off. The family found somewhere else to stay.

Firefighters took about an hour to put out the fire, Crowell said.
