Frank J. McClay

Frank J. McClay, 78, of Hagerstown, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Jan. 8, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Frank Edgar McClay and Harvey and Mabel Albert McClay Turner.

He retired in 1986 from Garden State Tanning in Williamsport after more than 14 years of employment. He also was a truck driver for several years.

He was a veteran of World War II, stationed at Goose Bay, Alaska, in the U.S. Army Air Force.

He was a member of American Legion Post 202 of Williamsport.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy V. Chambers McClay, whom he married September 1944; two daughters, Barbara L. Deatrich and Judy C. Dowler, both of Hagerstown; three sisters, Doris Warrenfeltz of Cearfoss and Caroline Wolf and Flory Buffington, both of Hagerstown; three brothers, William Turner, Robert Turner and Russell Turner, all of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his caregiver of more than 20 years, Virginia Koontz of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald L. McClay; a sister, Katherine Norris; and a brother, Leroy McClay.

Services will be private.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, North Potomac Street, Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may made to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Route 9, Martinsburg, WV 25401, or a donation of blood to the American Red Cross Blood Bank.




Avis M. Lewis

Avis Mary Lewis, 66, of 11106 Lakeside Court, Hagerstown, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 31, 1936, in Troy, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Avis Hollis Liberty.

She is survived by her husband, Gordon W. Lewis; two daughters, Catherine T. Hallam of Ellicott City, Md., and Cynthia A. Schiada of North Highlands, Calif.; two sons, David P. Lewis of Clear Spring and Timothy W. Lewis of Hagerstown; two sisters, Carolyn Welcome of Poestenkill, N.Y., and Lynn Roesch of Troy, N.Y.; a brother, Thomas Liberty of Nassau, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert P. Lewis.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. The Rev. Gerald Ash will officiate.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lee D. Shank

QUINCY, Pa. - Lee Downey Shank, 76, of Quincy Village and formerly of Williamsport, who died Thursday, July 18, 2002, was preceded in death by a brother, John L. Shank.




Elizabeth H. Mowbray

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Elizabeth Helen Pflug Mowbray, 97, of 501 Layton Road and formerly of Yakima, Wash., and Hedgesville, W.Va., died Friday at Pine Ridge Retirement and Assisted Living Home, Warfordsburg, where she was a resident since 1999.

Born Oct. 16, 1904, in Wauconda, Wash., she was the daughter of the late Anna Marie Petrich and John George Pflug.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Mowbray. They were married June 12, 1955.

She was a 1923 graduate of Tonasket Washington High School.

She was a housekeeper for the A.C. Wells family until 1955.

She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She is survived by a sister, Nan A. Butterton of Warfordsburg, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family in Yakima.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.




Larry C. DeLawder

BOLIVAR, W.Va. - Larry Cleveland DeLawder, 52, of Polk Street, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home.

Born Sept. 26, 1949, in Ranson, W.Va., he was the son of Mabel Gray DeLawder of Bolivar and the late Raymond W. DeLawder Sr.

He was a carpenter for Richmond American Homes in Chantilly, Va.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a Protestant.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Shawn L. DeLawder of Ranson; two sisters, Nancy Royston of Front Royal, Va., and Debbie Weister of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va.; a brother, Raymond W. DeLawder Jr. of Bolivar; a grandson; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. James R. Smith, Dr. Wyman Hall and William Custer will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Lutheran Cemetery, Bolivar.

The family will receive friends Monday and Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John D. Lowe Jr.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - John Douglas Lowe Jr., 72, of Shepherdstown, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home.

Born July 12, 1930, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Douglas Lowe Sr. and Ella Walper Lowe.
