If you encounter an aggressive driver ...

July 19, 2002

State officials with the Smooth Driving Program of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., recommend the public take the following measures if they encounter aggressive drivers.

  • Don't challenge them. Avoid eye contact and don't return rude gestures.

  • Get out of their way even if you have to pull over onto the shoulder.

  • Give them the benefit of the doubt. Not all aggressive driving is intentional.

  • Don't block the passing lane. Move over to the right lane, particularly if you are a slow driver.

  • Don't tailgate.

  • Allow plenty of time to get to your destination.

  • Resist the temptation to "teach someone a lesson."

  • Dial #77 on a cellular telephone to report aggressive drivers or call your local police department.
