July 19, 2002|by JACK HILL III

Despite being down to its final out, Hagerstown B refused to quit.

Chambersburg Suburban American, coached by Bob Snowberger, held a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning but Hagerstown B rallied, scoring twice for an 11-10 victory Thursday night on the first day of the PONY League District Tournament at Funkhouser Park.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Jared Bussard reached on a fielding error for Hagerstown B. Josh Ruppenthal pinch ran. Blake McCoy then doubled to the right field corner to score Ruppenthal with the tying run. A throwing error on the same play allowed McCoy to come all the way around to score the winning run on a very close play at home plate.

"These guys just don't quit," Hagerstown B manager Jim Acre said. "They came back every time that they got behind. We told them in the bottom of the seventh inning, 'You haven't given up all game, so why stop now?' In the bottom of the seventh inning, we were down to our last out. It was just fortunate that batted ball found a hole. We just capitalized on that good fortune."
