Fun in many flavors: Celebrate! The Arts at Old Market Day

July 18, 2002|by KATE COLEMAN

"The mission of the arts council is to be as diverse as we can," says Anne Finucane, program director for Chambersburg Area Council for the Arts.

That mission will certainly be accomplished as 20 different musical events highlight CELEBRATE! the Arts at Old Market Day Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The downtown festival will have four performance stages featuring jazz, blues, Cajun, Celtic and classical music.

"All different flavors," is how Beth Luka describes the event. Luka, the arts council's recently retired executive director, is now a volunteer.

The Whirly Bird Square Dance club will swing their partners at 9 a.m. Bayou Bandits will bring the spice of traditional Cajun French music to the stage at 10 a.m., and the mood will be vintage blues at 11 a.m. with Beulah Mae. Other performers include the Cumberland Valley Jazz Sextet, jazz artist Khan Jamal, Americana/contemporary folk duo Voxology and Shawn Craver, with Mountain Celtic music.

There will be storytellers, an acrobat/unicyclist/juggler, a portrayal of Abraham Lincoln by James Getty and an organ grinder with a monkey.

There also will be some 250 craft and food vendors as well as craft demonstrations and hands-on art opportunities for children.
