SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. - A fire that destroyed an abandoned two-story log home behind South Jefferson Public Library Monday night is being described by fire officials as suspicious, a county fire official said Tuesday.
It appears the fire along Summit Point Road started on a front porch, said Ed Smith, chief of the Independent Fire Co.
When firefighters arrived at the house after getting the call about 10:30 p.m., it was engulfed in flames, said Smith.
It was difficult to extinguish the fire because of the building's log construction, said Smith.
Firefighters from Jefferson County, Berkeley County and Clarke County, Va., worked for about three hours to extinguish the blaze, said Smith.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, said Smith.
