Robert E. Moats

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Robert E. Moats, 70, of 345 Fairview Ave., died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at his home.

Born Nov. 4, 1931, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late George Edward and Lillian Rock Moats.

He received his G.E.D. while in the military.

He was employed by Landis Machine Co. and then Frick Co., both in Waynesboro. He was a machinist at Mack Trucks in Hagerstown from 1962 until his retirement in 1991.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as an M.P.

He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Waynesboro.

He was a member of Waynesboro Fish and Game Association; Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Waynesboro; and Whirly Bird Square Dance Club.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. "Patsy" Scott Moats, whom he married July 24, 1954; two sons, Robert E. Moats and Jeffrey L. Moats, both of Waynesboro; one brother, Harold Moats of York, Pa.; three granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Hilda Diffenderfer, Martha Green, Gladys Cook, Grace Foster and Olive Gouker; and two brothers, Melvin Moats and Merris Moats.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Pastor Lin Smalec will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, with graveside military services by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 of Chambersburg, Pa.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Martha J. Comerer

Martha J. Comerer, 96, formerly of 618 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 25, 1906, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Jacob Hillard and Ethel Vera Trout Comerer.

She was a 1924 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She retired from F&M Bank in Hagerstown, where she served as a bookkeeper for more than 25 years.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.

She was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by one cousin, Joyce Crawford of Washington, D.C.; and two close friends and caregivers, Sandra J. Duffey of Hagerstown, and Nancy M. Stine of Greencastle, Pa.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Genevieve Radclift.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, North Potomac Street, Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert C. Lehman will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.

Lorraine Newkirk

TUCSON, Ariz. - Lorraine "Peggy" Newkirk, 74, of Tucson, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, in Tucson.

Born Aug. 13, 1927, in Big Pool, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Devona Newkirk.

She was a 1945 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She retired from Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, and Lockheed Martin in Orlando, Fla., after 31 years as an executive secretary.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Orlando.

She is survived by one sister, Mildred Carson of Boonsboro; and nieces and nephews.

No services are planned.

Arrangements are by Adair Funeral Home, Tucson.




Steven T. Bowie Sr.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Steven Todd Bowie Sr., 38, of Fayetteville, and formerly of Frederick, Md., died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Durham (N.C.) Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Born July 15, 1963, he was the son of Margaret D. Bowie of Silver Spring, Md., and Francis T. Bowie of Frederick.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Joyce Bowie; three children, Steven T. Bowie Jr. of Hagerstown, Shihee H. Bowie of Frederick, and Briana H. Bowie of Fayetteville; two sisters, Erica F. Bowie of Frederick, and Dana Bowie of Virginia; two brothers, Craig Jackson of Norfolk, Va., and Jeffery Bowie of Silver Spring; aunts; uncles; one niece; and cousins.

Services will be Friday at noon at Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home, Frederick. The Rev. Christine Monroe will officiate. Burial will be in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills, Md.

Visitation will be Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. at the church. The family will receive friends Friday at 11 a.m. at the church.




Jane E. Ring

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Jane Elizabeth Greenfield Ring, 74, of Hedgesville, died Monday, July 15, 2002.

She was the daughter of the late Harlan and Bessie Leonard Greenfield.

She was a nurse at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va., for many years. She also worked as a private duty nurse.

She attended Berkeley Station Bible Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Gloria J. Ring of Martinsburg, and Holly R. Stacy of Alachua, Fla.; one son, Michael Ring of Martinsburg; four sisters, Bonnie Ring, Lillian Symons, Gloria Mason and Eleanor Jefferson, all of Martinsburg; five brothers, James Greenfield, the Rev. Fred A. Greenfield, Floyd Greenfield, Frank Greenfield and Jack Greenfield, all of Martinsburg; and three grandsons.
