Funkstown 5-5, Frederick 4-12

FUNKSTOWN - Gerry Spessard's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Funkstown a victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Frederick.

Aaron Showe reached on an error and moved to second on Josh Carter's sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Spessard's game-winner.

David Miner and Matt Johnson both had two hits for Funkstown (25-7, 1-2 Western Maryland District second half). Alex Dub hit a solo homer and Rob Staley had two hits for Frederick.


Joe Hays went 3-for-4 with five RBI as Frederick rolled to an easy victory in the second game, earning a split. Taylor Covey had two hits, including a solo homer, and Dan Leatherman also had two hits.

Danny Fowler went 3-for-3 with a solo home run to lead Funkstown. Matt Allen went 3-for-4, while Aaron Showe added a solo homer.

District 1 11-12 All-Stars

South Mountain 4, Clear Spring 3: John Shobe had two hits and Bradley Rohrer homered for South Mountain. Chipper Mellott had two hits, while Brett Turner homered for Clear Spring.

Federal 3, American 1: Tyler Hornbecker's three-run homer was the game-winning hit for Federal. Colin McWilliams and Andrew Stout had two hits, while Kyle Hoffman struck out six in the win.

Federal plays at South Mountain in the losers' bracket on Monday at 6 p.m.

Valley 9, South Mountain 5: Craig Trueblood had two hits for Valley. Ryan Lewis, David Lewis and Josh Danner each had two hits for South Mountain.

Federal 6, Maugansville 4: Will Murray had three hits for Federal. Corey Forsythe had two hits for Maugansville.

National 12, West End 2: Steven Mills had three hits, while Chris Loudin had two hits for National. Joe Breahl, Tim Graves and Greg Lymen each had two hits for Federal.

National 14, Sharpsburg 3: Brett Barr had a triple and three RBI for National.

Valley Blue 13, West End 3: Jeff Hogue had two hits to lead Valley.

Clear Spring 20, Maugansville 17: Zack Jordan and Jared Brandt had three hits for Clear Spring. Mike Churchey had three hits for Maugansville.

South Mountain 15, Valley White 2: Joe Minoglio had four hits, while Justin Lewis had three hits for South Mountain.

West End 17, Sharpsburg 4: Matt Stambaug and Dalton Shoemaker both had two hits for West End.

Northeast 16, Smithsburg 13: Justin Nick and Darren Jordan had two hits for Libertytown. Tim Cole had three hits and Josh Conway and Chris Blickenstaff had two hits for Smithsburg.

Smithsburg 11, MVAA 9: Jared Ferguson had three hits, including a grand slam, while Leon Souders and Dustin Pellegrino had two hits for Smithsburg. Jason Patino had two hits for MVAA.

Hagerstown A 13, Dover 4: Marcellus Sumlin led Hagerstown with three hits, including a home run, while Cam Shiffler, Ryan Heabner, A.J. Roberts, Kenny Shanholtz and Chad Bikle all had two hits. Bikle and Roberts also homered.

Hagerstown B 17, Chambersburg 11: Jarred Bussard and Aaron Dickson each had three hits and Cadyn Robinson had two hits for Hagerstown. Jaron Gembe, Ryan Lehman and Chad Jones each had two hits for Chambersburg.

Dover 10, Chambersburg 9: Ryan Bennett had three hits and Alex Benedict had two hits, including a home run, for Chambersburg.

Hagerstown A 15, Hagerstown B 5: Adam Murbaugh had three hits, including two home runs, to lead Hagerstown A. D.J. Roberts had two hits, including a a home run, and Corey Baker also homered. Cadyn Robinson had two hits for Hagerstown B.

South End Tavern took second place and batted over .500 as a team at the Fannettsburg, Pa. state qualifer.

FLINTSTONE, Md. - Maria Spinnler, 40, of Hagerstown, won the overall and Masters division women's titles with a time of 19 minutes, 38 seconds Saturday at the 4th Annual Katie DeRosa RRCA Ladies Distance Festival 5K at Rocky Gap State Park.

Margaret Horioka, 47, of Williamsport, finished 24th overall and fifth in the Masters division in 23:37.

In the men's race, Jaron Hawkins, 19, won with a time of 16:34. Mike Spinnler, 43, finished ninth overall in 18:48.
