Boats collide on Potomac

July 13, 2002

A Smithsburg woman was thrown into the water when two boats collided on the Potomac River near Four Locks ramp just south of Clear Spring on Friday afternoon, Department of Natural Resources spokesman John Surrick said.

An 18-foot bass boat traveling 30 mph downstream along the Maryland shoreline at about noon struck a 19-foot Sunbird powerboat moving slowly across the river toward the Maryland shore, Surrick said.

Marcie Baxter, 29, a passenger in the bass boat, was thrown into the river on impact, Surrick said. Baxter was pulled back into the boat, taken to shore and transported by ambulance to Washington County Hospital where she was treated and released, Surrick said.

The bass boat operator, James Rudell Jr., 50, of Smithsburg, was not injured, he said.

The powerboat operator, Christopher Coldsmith, 36, of Fayetteville, Pa., and two young passengers were not injured, Surrick said.

Maryland Natural Resources Police are investigating the accident, he said.
