Mail Call for 7/9

July 10, 2002

"I wanted to tell you the city has finally done something right that everyone can agree with. The fireworks at the fairgrounds were absolutely gorgeous. It was a wonderful evening and to hear the oohs and aahs of the children and adults was well worthwhile. It makes me proud to be an American. Maybe they should use the new Fairgrounds Park for the blues festival for the Friday and Saturday events like they do on Sunday. Then it wouldn't clog the downtown streets. To the city and Karen Giffin - it was absolutely wonderful. Keep up the good work."

"This is to the person that's raising money to send the non-Christian to Afghanistan: maybe he is proud to be an American, but just doesn't go to the same church as you. Maybe he doesn't want to go to Afghanistan. One thing we protect in this country is the right of our people to practice whatever religion they choose, whether you like it or not. Maybe you should go to Afghanistan."

"This is in response to the person who called in about the 'Pledge' and said all we need to do is take the name of God off all the money and the court system, abolish it altogether. I just want to comment, I have a pretty good idea that if something should happen terribly in our schools - that these were children being killed as it was out in Columbine - the first thing that would come out of that person's mouth would be, 'Oh, my God.' Yes, people do call on Him when they think there is something tragic. Otherwise, they have nothing to do with Him."

"I don't quite think this is right for The Daily Mail to advertise cigarette sales out of Pennsylvania or wherever. I know they pay you to do this, but I think it's wrong, because this is where people see the bargains and they go for them. Cigarettes shouldn't be advertised in the paper at all."

"The fireworks at Fairgrounds Park Thursday night - that was the third straight year that fireworks have been there. I know - I live on Cannon Avenue and that's the third year they've had fireworks at Fairgrounds Park. I don't understand the paper saying it's been a long time - someone said 40 years. That might be the last time the city sponsored it, but they have been there the last three. I just wanted to set the record straight."
