Senior housing complex to officially open today

July 09, 2002

Interfaith Housing of Western Maryland will celebrate the official opening of the Francis Murphy Apartments today with a dedication ceremony from 3 to 5 p.m.

Francis Murphy Apartments, 20014 Rosebank Way, is a 120-unit complex in Hagerstown that provides affordable housing for seniors. The complex is located near medical facilities and other community services on Robinwood Drive.

Francis Murphy Apartments is one of Interfaith Housing of Western Maryland's most recent projects in Washington County. Construction of the first 64 apartments was completed in the spring and the second phase, which is another 56 units, will begin this fall.

The Francis Murphy Apartments are available to anyone older than 62, with incomes at 60 percent or less of Washington County's median income. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the county's median income is $37,327. Therefore, seniors making less than $22,000 may qualify to rent an apartment there. Rents are based upon each individual tenant's income.

The three-story, independent-living community is named in honor of the late P. Francis Murphy, former Western vicar for the Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, and the founder of Interfaith Housing of Western Maryland.

Apartments and handicapped units are still available. The complex is managed by the Washington County Housing Authority. Those interested in renting may call the site manager, Pam Schnebly, at 301-791-3188.
