Fire burns three barns

July 07, 2002

ROHRERSVILLE - More than 100 firefighters were called to a Friday afternoon fire that destroyed three barns on an inactive farm, said Lt. Richard Atwell with the Rohrersville Fire Station.

The barns at 4101 Rohrersville Road were six miles from Brownsville Pond, where approximately 12 tanker trucks stocked up on water to carry to the fire, Atwell said.

Atwell said between 100 and 150 firefighters from Washington County, Frederick County, Md., Jefferson County, W.Va., and Loudoun County, Va., responded to the 2:41 p.m. blaze that was "pretty well involved" when firefighters arrived.

The fire was out by 5:55 p.m.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, but was not expected to be arson, Atwell said.

Two of the three wooden barns were large and the third barn was mid-size, he said. Since the Bowers family's farm was inactive, there were no livestock or hay in the barn, Atwell said.

Atwell said he could see smoke from the fire when he stepped outside his Picnic Woods Road home in Frederick County, across the mountain from Rohrersville Road.

The Fire Marshal's Office said in a press release that it was interested in talking with two men who stopped at the Bowers residence to report the fire. The men were asked to contact the office at 1-877-890-0199.
