Washington County's unemployment rate decreased in May to 4.4 percent, according to preliminary estimates released Friday by the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

The county's unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in April.

"It was a nice little drop," said Job Service Supervisor Bill Kelly with the labor department's Hagerstown office.

He said the numbers reflect an increase in jobs in the retail industry as retail stores adjust to summer business.

It also probably reflects more jobs in the transportation industry as truck drivers move retail goods and supplies to the businesses, Kelly said.

Normally, the number of employees in the construction, retail and landscape industries increases during summer months, he said.

"The labor force did not grow much at all," he said.

There were 71,297 people in the labor force in May, 168 more than in April, according to the released estimates.

A news release from the state said of Allegany, Garrett and Washington counties: "Unemployment declined throughout the region, with local downturns helping to push the unemployment rate in the Western suburbs down by a full percentage point to 5.1 percent in May."

Allegany County's unemployment rate dropped from 7.7 in April to 6.3 in May, according to the Labor Department.

Garrett County's unemployment rate dropped from 7.4 in April to 6.3 in May, according to the Labor Department.

The unemployment rate is the result of estimates calculated during the week of May 12, so it reflects a snapshot of how employment was during a brief period in the month.

Frederick County's unemployment rate also decreased, from 3.3 percent in April to 3 percent in May, according to the Labor Department.

Maryland's jobless rate was 4.6 percent in May, compared with 5 percent in April.

Nationally, the unemployment rate in May was 5.5 percent, compared with 5.7 percent in April, according to the Labor Department.
