Halfway wins 9-10 district title

HALFWAY - Halfway Little League finished a perfect run through the District 1 9-10 All-Star Tournament Friday with a 14-7 victory over Maugansville Little League in the championship game.

"We never quit," Halfway manager Scott Herbert said. "We were a very loose team. They stepped up to the plate when they had to and that is the mark of a champion. I have never seen 9- and 10-year-olds that can hit as well as this team from top to bottom. Everybody on this team can hit."

Halfway snapped a 7-7 tie with Maugansville by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of wild pitches, a two-run double by Brandon McCauley and an RBI double by Josh Green.

McCauley and Green had two hits and two RBI in the win, while Dylan Zimmerman and Chris McSherry also had two hits.

"A former manager, Spud Benner, passed away three weeks ago," Maugansville manager Mike Walters said. "He taught us a lot about the game and how to treat kids. We want to dedicate second place to him."

Halfway now hosts a best-of-3 sectional series, starting July 20.
