Suns get one in 9th for win

July 02, 2002

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Tomas Garrido capped a three-hit, three-RBI game with a dramatic run-scoring triple in the ninth inning Monday to lift the Hagerstown Suns to a see-saw 10-9 victory over the Charleston Alley Cats.

Garrido, playing just his 13th game since coming to the Suns on June 1, upped his batting average 36 points to .342 and more than doubled his RBI count to five as Hagerstown (3-9, 37-45) won its second straight game after dropping nine of its first 10 to start the South Atlantic League's second half.

Cleanup hitter Tyler Von Schell also drove in three runs and Bryan Carter hit his eighth homer of the season to lead off the fifth inning as the Suns mounted three comebacks before finally winning.

Closer Ryan Meaux got Hagerstown out of Charleston's four-run eighth inning, which tied the game at 9-9, to pitch 1 2/3 innings of relief to even his record at 3-3.

Keith Anderson started the ninth-inning rally with a one-out grounder that third baseman Rob Cosby threw away for a two-base error. Garrido followed by ripping Felix Romero's 3-1 pitch to right center field for the game-winning triple.

Hagerstown fought off the effects of Charleston's two four-run innings - in the third and the eight - to get the win.

Von Schell's bases-loaded single in the first gave Hagerstown a 1-0 lead and his RBI hit in the seventh ignited the Suns' five-run outburst.

Garrido added run-scoring singles in the sixth and seventh innings.
