While the proceeds from last weekend's Relay for Life are still coming in, an American Cancer Society spokeswoman said the totals are already in excess of $65,000.

"Washington County came through with flying colors and made the June 21-22 relay a grand success," said Janeen Baker, community specialist for the local American Cancer Society regional office in Winchester, Va.

Relay for Life was composed of teams of between eight and 15 people. An overnight event, team members walked around the track at School Stadium during the entire event. Campsites were set up by various teams with a competition there as well.

"The event was magical," Baker said. "The people were happy and enthusiastic."

The top fund-raising team was D.M. Bowman with $14,120, Baker said.

The award for top fund-raiser went to Chris Mills of Garden State Tanning with $1,952, while the best campsite award was won by the Target team, Baker said.

Proceeds go toward research, prevention and cancer control programs both nationally and locally. The breakdown is 40 percent local, 40 percent national and 20 percent general fund.
