Fire destroys mobile home south of Hagerstown

June 30, 2002

Fire destroyed an unoccupied mobile home south of Hagers-town on Saturday.

About 20 firefighters from Funkstown, Fairplay, Boonsboro and Halfway responded to the blaze at 9525 Sharpsburg Pike at about 3 p.m., but it was too late, Funkstown Fire Chief Jonathan Gift said.

The mobile home, which was filled with old furniture, trash and other debris, burned to the ground within 25 minutes, he said.

Mobile homes "just burn fast," Gift said. "They're wide open."

No one was injured in the fire, but a man gardening nearby suffered a minor burn on his hand when he tried to move a car that was parked nearby, Gift said.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Saturday night.
