Recycling business burns down

June 29, 2002

SHADY GROVE, Pa. - Sixteen people at a pallet recycling business are out of work after the 19th-century barn that housed the business burned down Thursday.

Rescue Hose Co. 1st Lt. James Freeman said there is no word on what caused the fire, which destroyed the barn at 1620 Buchanan Trail East. There was nothing to indicate it was arson, he said.

Shank Pallet Recyclers, which turns old pallets into mulch, hopes someone will donate a tent the company can use to reopen the business and bring back its employees, Freeman said.

The fire was reported at 6:45 p.m. The barn was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, he said. Firefighters kept it from spreading to a nearby field stacked with pallets.

An engine from the fire company based in Greencastle, Pa., was kept on the scene all night to make sure the fire didn't spread.
