June 27, 2002

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A substantial marijuana-growing operation in the basement of a home at 1114 Tallow Hill Road was uncovered Wednesday afternoon and the resident was taken into custody by officers of the Franklin County Drug Task Force, police said.

Jonathon Spealman was being held on $50,000 bond Wednesday night at the Franklin County Prison. Charges include possession with intent to deliver, unlawful manufacture, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers said they seized 56 live marijuana plants, several bags of processed marijuana, grow lights, timers, fans, an irrigation system and other items associated with the drug trade.

In addition, seven handguns were taken from the residence, officers said.

The street value of the plants was estimated at $56,000.

Not at home when officers arrived, Spealman showed up at 5 p.m. and was taken into custody without incident, police said.
