Struggles continue for Suns

June 26, 2002

SALSBURY, Md. - Left-hander Kurt Birkins scattered seven hits and struck out five, leading the Delmarva Shorebirds over the Hagerstown Suns 6-2 on Tuesday night.

Hagerstown (1-5, 35-41) got the board in the first inning as Julian Benavidez doubled home the game's first two runs.

Birkens (7-5) simply kept Hagerstown of balance the rest of the way. The Suns did threaten in the fifth, but left the bases loaded. All told, Hagerstown left seven on base.

Delmarva (3-3, 35-41) closed the gap in the second inning on Kevin Webster's RBI single. Alex Gordon tied the game with an RBI double in the fourth inning.

In the seventh, Delmarva took advantage of some Hagerstown miscues. A passed ball and wild pitch gave the Shorebirds a 4-2 lead and then Tripper Johnson tripled home a third run for a 5-2 lead.

Delmarva tacked on another run in the eighth inning as Gary Cates singled home a run.

The Shorebirds have won the first two games of the three-game set, going for the sweep tonight.
