Mail Call for 6/24

June 25, 2002

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some` of the calls we have received lately:

  • "I would like to know why electric companies, etc. can send your bills to you for 25 cents and we have to pay 34 cents, soon to be 37 cents. Is something wrong with this picture?"

  • "I would like to know what July 4 activities are being planned in the area. Specifically, are there any fireworks planned for the Blue Ridge Summit, Cascade, Waynesboro or Leitersburg area?"

  • "Are they going to have the fireworks in downtown Hagerstown again this year?"

  • "I am responding to the person complaining about mail carriers not picking up their mail. Do you expect a mail carrier to stop at each house and ask if they have any letters to mail today? It is hard enough for them to get the mail delivered at a decent time. Why don't you try walking to a mailbox to deliver your letters? You seem to be the type of person who expects everyone to wait on you."

  • "Whoever is in charge of keeping up the Black Rock Golf Course is doing a good job. For a public course, I think Black Rock is in pretty good shape. They have done a good job on the greens and the fairways are in good shape, too. You don't mind paying the greens fees when the course in good shape like Black Rock is. Likewise, the Municipal Golf Course is in nice shape as well. For the money you pay, I think this area is in pretty good shape when it comes to public golf courses."

  • "I also have a problem with Washington County Free Library about overdue books and being charged for things that have already been returned. I talked to my relative in Baltimore that works at a library and they have never heard of such as thing and they take their word for it. About not being able to use your card until the bill is paid, she said she has never heard of such a thing. Something is going on with our library system, but they are losing a lot of people. I don't think this is fair, people say they return their books and they say you haven't and the fees are out of control. Someone needs to check into this."

  • "I've never seen a city with as many traffic lights as this one. You can't get from one end of the city to the other without stopping at a dozen red lights. It is so frustrating, I could just scream."

  • "I would like to thank the two men who helped me put my Father's Day gift in the car at Lowe's. My daughter and I were in the parking lot, she was holding the cart for me, but the container that the gift was in, was too heavy, so this man asked me if I needed any help and he put it in my car for me. I really appreciate it. He had a really nice black pick-up truck."

  • "It's pretty hard to believe you can go out and ask eight people if they're following the U.S. in the World Cup and all eight say no. That's why soccer will never be as popular in this country as it is in other countries. The people have not embraced the sport here as in other cultures."
