Plane pilot in fair condition

June 24, 2002

A Michigan man who was hurt Thursday afternoon when his single-engine plane ran off the end of the runway at the Hagerstown Regional Airport was in fair condition Sunday night at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Hans Georg Stuermer, 67, was accompanied to the hospital by his daughter, Tanja Jessica Stuermer, 22, both of Brooklyn, Mich. She was the only passenger in the Mooney Executive plane.

Taken first by ambulance to Washington County Hospital after the 4:24 p.m. crash, Hans Stuermer was later flown to Baltimore for treatment of his injuries.

There was no fire at the time of the crash and only a small fuel spill. The plane came to rest just shy of the northbound lanes of Interstate 81.

After Federal Aviation Administration representatives completed their investigation of the crash, the plane was moved into a hangar. Authorities are waiting for the FAA's ruling on the cause of the crash.
