Delayed trauma program analysis is 'unacceptable'

June 21, 2002|by SCOTT BUTKI

Before Washington County Hospital closed its trauma center on June 1, hospital President and Chief Executive Officer James Hamill said the American College of Surgeons would analyze the trauma program starting July 1 and issue a report afterwards.

Hamill said Thursday, however, the group would now not be able to come to Washington County until late July.

That is "unacceptable," Hamill said. The situation must be dealt with earlier than that, he said.

Robert Bass, executive director of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, volunteered to help. MIEMSS oversees trauma centers' designations.

Bass said Thursday he can bring a multi-disciplinary team of trauma center experts from Maryland and other states to Washington County to provide whatever help is needed, including analyzing the trauma program.

Hamill said he has accepted Bass' offer informally but has not yet done so formally.
