Man charged with robbing 73-year-old


A man accused of pushing a 73-year-old woman to the ground and stealing her purse Tuesday afternoon was apprehended a short time later and charged with robbery and second-degree assault, Hagerstown City Police said.

Joshua E. Spielman, 26, of 1222 Crescent Road, was being held at the Washington County Detention Center Tuesday night on $50,000 bond.

Police were called out for a strong-arm robbery in the first block of East Washington Street at about 3:50 p.m. Tuesday.

The victim reported someone grabbed her purse containing $44, pushed her down and fled toward North Locust Street, police said. A witness apparently told police of seeing the same thing.

Based on their accounts, police were able to locate a man matching the description and take him to Washington County Hospital so the victim could see him, said Lt. Jack Hall.

Spielman was then charged, Hall said.

The woman was treated at the hospital and released.




W. Va. woman seriously injured in crash


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Hedgesville woman was flown to the Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center Tuesday afternoon after an accident across from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center involving an SUV and a cement truck.

Christina J. Schildt, age unknown, of Rustic Tavern Road, was flown from the scene of the 2:15 p.m. accident on the Charles Town Road by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter, said Cpl. W.M. Spessert of the Berkeley County Sheriff's office. She was listed in serious condition Tuesday night.

Spessert's investigation revealed Schildt pulled her 1987 Isuzu Trooper from the lot of Metro Auto Sales into the path of a 1999 Mack cement truck driven by Larry Neace of Martinsburg, deputies alleged. The truck is owned by Potomac Construction Leasing, Spessert said.

Neace apparently wasn't hurt.




Woman charged with corruption of minors


FORT LITTLETON, Pa. -- A Fort Littleton, Pa., woman was charged with two counts of corruption of minors this week and was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in July.

The charges against Johanna Dawn Sipes, 23, stem from a March 27 incident at a residence on Plum Hollow Road in Dublin Township in Fulton County, Pennsylvania State Police in McConnellsburg said.

She is accused of persuading two teenagers to engage in sexual acts while she watched, police said. The minors were ages 14 and 15.

A preliminary hearing for Sipes is scheduled for 11 a.m. July 24 before District Justice Brenda Knepper, according to Knepper.




Area man remains in critical condition


INDIAN SPRINGS - An occupant of a 1985 Ford truck that ran into a tree in the 13200 block of Pecktonville Road at around 8:15 p.m. on June 9 remained hospitalized Tuesday at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Robert Kenneth Bloyer, 42, of 33 E. Salisbury St., Williamsport, was listed in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday.




Robber gets away with cash from store


STATE LINE, Pa. -- An armed robber held up a State Line, Pa., service station Monday night, Pennsylvania State Police said.

A man entered the L.R. Oil Co. on North Pennsylvania Avenue in State Line at 9:50 p.m., displayed a black revolver and demanded money from two workers, police said.

Neither worker, Thomas Ott, 21, of State Line, or a 17-year-old female, were injured, police said.

The robber fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

He was described as a white male in his early to mid 20s, 5-foot 10-inches to 6-foot tall, with a thin to medium build and weighing 165 to 180 pounds, police said.

He had red hair and a goatee and wore a blue shirt with white stripes around the collar and sleeves and blue jeans.

City police seek man on probation charge


Hagerstown City Police have a warrant for Lewis Wayne Meadows and are seeking information on his whereabouts.

Meadows, 37, was last known to have lived at 125 N. Prospect St. He is 6 feet 3 inches tall, 190 pounds, with brown hair, blue eyes.

The warrant for Meadows is a Washington County District Court bench warrant issued March 27 for alleging violation of probation on an original charge of second-degree assault, police said.

Pa. man arrested on Internet sex charge


FREDERICK, Md. - A Chambersburg, Pa., man was arrested Tuesday after meeting with a person he believed to be a minor he had met on the Internet and solicited for sex, Maryland State Police alleged.

Paul D. Thomas, 59, of the 1000 block of Warm Springs Road, was charged with one count each of attempted second-degree sex offense, attempted second-degree rape, and using a computer to solicit sex with a minor.

Thomas was being held at the Frederick County Detention Center Tuesday night on $65,000 bond, according to a Frederick County District Court bond commissioner.
